Penicillin is perhaps the one agent that marked the beginning of therapeutics for the control of diseases. Following Penicillin was the discovery of Streptomycin by Selman Waksman, who coined the term “antibiotic”. Penicillin and Streptomycin are classic products of biotechnology – byproducts of microbial metabolism – and an endless series of antibiotics would soon be discovered after them. The growth of the big Pharmas of today had their origin with antibiotics. I personally helped discover and develop several of these antibiotics.
There is no doubt that antibiotics were miracle drugs against infectious disease, saving countless lives. But infectious micro-organisms are clever and are now evolving into resistant forms. Fresh challenges are emerging as well with diseases of modern living and those associated with aging, including cardiovascular, cancer, arthritis, neurological, etc. It is a daunting task to design and develop therapeutic agents against such diseases, and we at JJ Pharma, are committed to do our share of developing such medicines. Our lead compounds are targeted against coronary heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the world. Our compounds have the unique feature of elevating HDL levels in animal models. Another lead JJP compound in animal trials has shown to be effective against rheumatoid arthritis.
We hear statistics all the time about morbidity and mortality from various diseases, but numbers do not tell the whole story of the immense dedication of effort needed to fight diseases. At JJ Pharma we have seriously taken on this dedication. We have a team experienced in the development of therapeutics from the laboratory to the clinic and we invite you to watch us grow – to life!
